Review: Corn Husk Doll Kit

Just a quick note…this review is really applicable to anyone with children, whether you homeschool or not!

Corps of Re-Discovery is a family-owned company dedicated to selling products that will help you and your child re-discover the early days of America.  After traveling 47 of the 50 states and studying the rich history and culture of our nation, a homeschooling family worked together to develop project kits to enhance study of Native Americans, Frontiersmen, and Pioneer Americans.  Their company’s name is inspired by the Corp of Discovery, Lewis and Clark’s party commissioned by Thomas Jefferson to find east-west passage to the Pacific Ocean.

We received the Corn Husk Doll kit to review for the TOS Homeschool Crew. Since my girls and I enjoy reading the Little House on the Prairie books together, they were excited about this project. My oldest quickly pointed out that Laura had a corn-cob doll.

The kit, which currently sells for an incredibly affordable price of $4.50, arrived with corn husks, string, fabric, and instructions. The only additional supplies you need are scissors and a needle and thread (if you choose to hand-sew the apron and bonnet).

I am not a very crafty person, but I was able to follow the directions and successfully complete the doll. My girls, ages six and four helped. It is not something they could have done on their own, but was a great project for us to do together. They were captivated by every step, from soaking the cornhusks to assembling the doll. We did have a bit of trouble with one step in regard to the arms, but as you can see in the picture, she turned out quite well!

Making the doll gave us a great opportunity to talk about what life was like in America long ago. My girls could not imagine living in a time when it was not easy to just go to the store and buy a baby doll.

We had a few small corn husks left over, so our corn husk doll has five “children.”:)

I am impressed with what the Corps of Re-Discovery has to offer. I love that it is a family company that provides a way for my family to experience a bit of what life was like in early America. The projects are creative, hands on, and just challenging enough to give a taste of times when life was not so convenient.

Corps of Re-Discovery has many project kits available on their website. Other members of the TOS Homeschool Crew reviewed various kits, including the corn husk doll, a fringe pouch, a coin pouch, a tomahawk, and a patchwork quilt. To read these reviews, visit the TOS Homeschool Crew Blog!

Disclosure: I received one corn husk doll kit free of charge for the purpose of this review. All opinions are my own, and no other compensation was received.
