Today I sat down and made a weekly to-do sheet for myself. I used a pretty font, and the page looked great. I decided to save it in my “Organizing” folder on my computer. Sounds like a great place, huh? Only, I couldn’t find the “Organizing” folder.
I’m sure all of you more organized types are in utter horror right now. And I know of one “online friend who recently became an IRL friend” who is probably snorting. I’m not mentioning any names, but you know who you are! If you aren’t snorting now, you will be by the end!
I finally found the folder. See, a few months ago my computer desktop had become so cluttered with files, photos I’d downloaded, etc, that it was overwhelming to me. I have a really bad habit…drag and drop…straight to my desktop. Anyway, I couldn’t take it anymore, but I didn’t have the time to put things in their proper place.
I’m a pro at stashing stuff. Did you know you can even do that on your computer? Type-A friends, please brace yourselves…
I made a new folder within my Documents folder. I called it “Erin’s Desktop.” I selected all that mess on my desktop, stuff I will probably need someday, and I dragged and dropped (am I allowed to say it like that?) the whole mess right into my handy-dandy new folder. Just like that, my Desktop was clean as a whistle.
Does it make it any better that it was Phil’s idea?
No? I didn’t think so, but I thought I’d ask.
But I sure felt better about it. Then I could see my pretty desktop picture. I change it often, using whatever stock photo I find especially beautiful that day. Right now, it’s a walnut…
Isn’t that a beautiful walnut? I dream of taking photos like that!
Back to my story. The aforementioned dragging and dropping incident took place several months ago. As the months passed, months in which I did not even look for my Organizing folder, I forgot where I had stashed it.
I finally found it today, and it is now a happy resident of my Documents folder. Much better, right?
As for the rest of the items in my Documents>Erin’s Desktop folder…well that can wait until another day!

Erin, you crack me up, and I am snorting along with our unmentioned friend! I have done this kind of thing myself so many times! I lose more things by organizing than if I had just left it alone!!

#snort! I guess I just revealed myself, huh?
Erin, that is hilarious!! I love you!! And Cherie cracks me up – ” I lose more things by organizing than if I had just left it alone!!”
I’ll be chuckling about this all afternoon.
Oh my goodness, girl! We’d be dangerous together.
I have a feeling I may know the friend you mentioned who’d be snorting right now. Does her name start with the letter T?

Oh, how funny!!! That so sounds like something I would do. I’m a total organizer/type-A wanna be, but I’m just not. You just took it to a whole new level, though!

I have a folder just like that except that it’s called “Clean Me Up” and it lives right on my desktop. I just sweep the “excess” stuff into it from time to time. You really don’t want to know how old some of those files are.
…but, my desktop is pretty!

Whatever the opposite of Type A Organizer is….that’s me. I don’t even know how to drag and drop things to my desktop. I have folders within my e-mail that I put stuff in when I remember to, usually when the e-mails in my box reach 1,000 or so. I’m glad you found what you’d lost!

Oh, Erin, I know how you feel! I’ve always said that if I ever have a lot of money, I’m hiring someone to organize my life! I can keep an organizational system once it’s in place, but I am horrible about creating it myself. I always put things away in ‘safe’ places so I won’t forget where they are, and, sure enough, I can’t find them!

So…it’s kind of like the digital version of a junk drawer?

Oh Erin, your story totally cracked me up. You know you can “search” your documents on your computer. I try to be organized with my file, but misplace stuff all. the. time. lol The search is the only thing that saves my sanity! LOL

I did a major computer junk drawer clean out recently and it felt so good!
Thanks for the little chuckle there.

“I have a really bad habit…drag and drop…straight to my desktop.”
Me too. My computer file system is scary!
That’s funny Erin! I have a desktop that needs to be cleaned off, you’ve inspired me to clean it up!
Oh Erin, I am forever “organizing” by putting things in a really great place, where I won’t forget, and… forgetting where that really great place was. It drives my poor hubby crazy. This post made me laugh… thanks. Oh and did you actually get to hear the ‘snort’ in person? I’d love to know.
Love it girlie!! I can so relate… I used to organize my e-mails into folders… now I have one GINORMOUS inbox… I never delete messages, just thousands of e-mails all sitting there… ah, the horror!!

Clutter on my desktop (or in my email inbox) drives me BANANAS!
My desk, however, is a totally different story.

Stopping by from the TOS Crew Blog walk. This story cracked me up! Usually when I can’t find something on the computer, it’s because I dragged and accidentally dropped into the wrong folder. Real life is another story – I am very good about organizing things into places I don’t remember
