The Homeschool Java posts at Closing Time are my opportunity to share our homeschooling journey with you. Grab a cup of coffee and join me!
The excitement about the coming school year is starting to build. Only 35 days to go.
Our curriculum direction is taking a significant shift this year. It started when I attended the SouthEast Homeschool Convention in March. I had no plans for a major change. There were a couple of small questions in my mind, and the rest was set. But as I walked through the expo hall, looking at what I had planned as well as all the other possibilities, a nagging feeling emerged. It wasn’t a situation of a curriculum not working, but more a knowing that it just wasn’t the right direction for our family for the coming year.
The ideas that emerged surprised me. Virtually every curriculum I found myself looking at was Classical.
Since the convention, I have done my homework. Classical Education was not a direction I had seriously considered. I had my concerns about it, and I also had a lot of misconceptions. From the research I have done and a lot of prayer, I do believe it is the right direction for us.
As we enter our fourth year of homeschooling, with M entering 2nd grade and E in kindergarten, here is the plan:
The Ordinary Parent’s Guide to Teaching Reading
First Language Lessons Levels 1 & 2
Math
History (Ancients)
Bible
God’s Great Covenant Old Testament 1 (by Classical Academic Press)
Science
Sonlight A (somewhat unsure of this…very likely this will change before the schoolyear starts)
Latin
Art
Artistic Pursuits Grades K-3 Book 1
Piano
to be determined
We will also be reviewing for the TOS Homeschool Crew. I think it’s going to be a great, busy year!
If you homeschool, what is your curriculum plan for the coming year?
